Fuel conversion

AES_DominicanRepublic-edited-1024x1024 PNG

AES operates two Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminals in the Caribbean—in the Dominican Republic and Panama—where we have led the transition to lower-carbon energy. These terminals were the first to provide LNG in each respective country and have provided natural gas to support not only the power sector but also industrial and commercial uses and the transportation sector.

We aim to improve the environmental and economic condition of many small liquid petroleum fuel consumers in the Caribbean, Central America, and the northern parts of South America by substituting dirtier and often more expensive fuel oil or diesel with cleaner-burning natural gas. In the Dominican Republic, for example, the country has avoided approximately 4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions that would have otherwise been emitted by using imported petroleum products. The projects have also had direct social benefits, by decreasing the overall cost of electricity and reducing volatility in the sector .
